This THIRD figure seemed so absurd when Democracy Now ran it, so I looked for another reference and found that Reuters piece.
But upon further searching I find that 140,000 figure referred to in a UN press release:
"UN humanitarians briefing the press in Geneva on Tuesday underscored the dire conditions faced by civilians in Gaza, where nearly 140,000 newly displaced people have been sheltering in schools run by the UN agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA" [source]
The total Palestine population is 4.923 million. 140,000 is 2.844% of Palestine. Perhaps this 140,000 figure was confused as a home figure rather than a displaced people count of 2.844% of Palestine.
